Who I am and Why I’m Here
Welcome back to the Bean Media Productions blog! I’m Mia Draksic, an intern who joined the team earlier this summer. Back in 2020, I began studying Animal Behavior and Anthrozoology at Canisius College. During sophomore year, my focus was turned around after signing up for a journalism elective. I didn’t expect to love that class like I did. I had so much fun talking about methods of writing for news sources, blog posts, promotions, and so on. I had a strong desire to experiment in different fields before doing something for the rest of my life. Ultimately I decided to pick it up as a second major with a focus on multimedia. Since then I have shifted my energy to this career path, using my internship at Bean Media to dive into the marketing side.
As our digital world is expanding, developing these skills will prove to be useful. I have already begun learning about SEO, marketing, social media, and so on. I am looking forward to expanding on this and applying my knowledge to the real world.
Understanding the Basics of SEO and Why It Matters
Grasping the concept of Search Engine Optimization is essential for improving both the quality and quantity of website traffic. It opens up more opportunities to create brand awareness, attract local customers, and develop a sense of community between brands and consumers. With how much content is on the web, this isn’t always easy. Before my time at Bean, I didn’t realize how much goes into SEO and how greatly a company can benefit from being higher on the SERP.
There are two types of SEO known as off-page and on-page, I focus on the latter. On-page SEO involves optimizing your website in terms of content and technical aspects. This is where we need to manage things such as HTML source code, schema, and meta tags. I focus on diving into finding search terms that are commonly used in Google, Bing, and Yahoo searches. I then use these terms to work them into my posts, assuring that they flow naturally and apply to the topic. Adding images, videos, and other means of media will increase credibility and engagement for my content, giving it that extra boost on the results pages. From here meta tags, alt tags, and header tags can also be optimized. I hope to eventually do more work with off-page SEO as well, including social media marketing. Having a solid social media presence helps achieve greater reach by sending stronger social signals to sites.
How Crawling and Indexing Can Boost Your Brand
An indexed site is a site that has enough value to be placed in search results. Indexing stores discovered pages in Google’s database using the results from Google bots or “spiders.” Sites that are not indexed will not appear in search engine results. Before a site is indexed, it must be crawled. This occurs when spiders go through a site to determine what it is about. All sites are crawled but not all are indexed. Google bots will fetch web pages and follow links in order to find new pages. Hence why backlinks are very important in a website. They will help crawlers find new pages and add them to Google’s index.
It’s important to let the bots know which pages to look at as they may scan less important pages and get the wrong impression of your site. This can be solved using robot.txt and directing them to the sections of your website that will be crawled and further indexed.
When creating content it’s important to keep its relevance in mind. Using Authority Labs I can monitor keyword searches for Bean Media and their clients. Matching your content to what users are looking for makes it more likely for them to see and then click on your page. Authority Labs is great for keeping up with ever-changing trends. Content must also be quality, ensuring that it stands out from competitors. I achieve this by comparing keyword usage to that of competitors. Additionally, I do extensive research before making a blog post. With unique content, it’s also more likely that buzz will be generated on social media. If a post is worth sharing, viewers are going to push it out to other users and platforms.
Wrapping It Up
While I have learned a lot already, I know there is plenty more to be done. I’m happy that this internship has helped me solidify my career path. I never would’ve seen myself working at an advertising agency or the marketing path at all for that matter. However, I’m glad I’ve found my way to it, and am looking forward to furthering my understanding of SEO and digital marketing.
